How to achieve the botanical look

19 Mar 2018

For me, the big attraction of the current botanical trend is that it looks completely different every time – and never fails to turn heads. This is a look that demands a good dose of floral theatre with the drama being generated by the careful staging of large plants, trees, flowers and foliage.

I have totally bought into botanicals, so much so that we now have our very own blossom trees in the workshop which have already enjoyed a starring role at some of our weddings this year. We have incorporated them into a breathtakingly romantic backdrop, sometimes using them to transform the aisle into an avenue of blossom, made all the more memorable thanks to a generous sprinkling of candlelight.

Wedding floristry is all about making memories and I am always on the lookout for interesting pieces to add to my collection of containers in the workshop. Some of my favourite finds recently have included some lovely earthy pots which are really characterful and will look fabulous filled with large headed roses or hydrangea heads surrounded by cascading greenery.

For a slightly softer and gentler botanical look, statement pots and plants can be complemented by some simple and stylish table centres. A row of glass bud vases (I have collected some lovely examples in etched glass to show brides when they come and visit us), each with a single rose perhaps, a sophisticated Calla lily or a sprig of frothy foliage counteracts the exuberance of the botanical look to bring a lovely touch of minimalism and romance. Terrariums are another good table centre option for brides who want to adopt some of the more elegant elements of the botanical trend. They look very pretty filled with tiny flower buds, candles and greenery or small succulents.
